Outstanding CALL TO ACTIVISM
What is a “call to activism”? It is writing that urges us to step up, speak out, and take action. I’ve mostly been a keyboard warrior, but from time to time I encounter writing powerful enough to move me off my computer chair and launch me into hands-on political activity.
Stories I read at Daily Kos in 2008 nudged me to attend the meetup that led to my writing postcards and letters to voters for the first time during the Obama campaign. Stories written here in 2014 inspired me to get out on the street and march a few blocks (all I could manage, but I was there!) with my handmade sign during a protest following the death of Eric Garner. Stories in 2016 by people I deeply respect motivated me to travel to Cannon Ball, North Dakota, and join hundreds of other clergy and lay activists in support of the Water Protectors at Standing Rock. And many stories here about our respected elders’ history of serious activism led me to decide to risk arrest in 2018 with Rev. Barber’s Poor People’s Campaign.
Members of Daily Kos have done so much real-world activism: We’ve written letters to the editor, published magazine articles and books, phone banked and canvassed for campaigns, been candidates for office ourselves, made signs for freeway overpasses, and traveled long distances to advocate for vulnerable people in need.
Did you ever read a story here that sparked your desire, lit your fire, and encouraged you to get out there and do something?
Nominations will be open as long as this story is accepting comments. You can nominate any writing that has ever been posted on Daily Kos. Don't be shy: You can even nominate yourself!
